Strange Message I Got - Help?

From: Darlene (imetoanirsh@yahoo.com) | Date: 2004-06-23 14:31:17 UTC
Dear Letterboxing Community -

Just got this message forwarded from another letterboxer - who seems
just as mistified as I am. Can you help with these clues?

GGWFB ITRNT ARSHR SRHDE IHETO OHEIW
OLOEO CMOJS RVEOT AASUO BIOAC ILRIL
IOTLT ONLER DNAEA YM

"He came unto his own, and his own received him not but went down."
John 11
"The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools
despise wisdom and instruction and will not be lead across." Proverbs

And lo though I walk through the Valley of the Hidden Ranch I shall
fear no Vinaigrette.

For those who welcome me home knoweth my power and hold no Blue
Cheese before me.

...and remember when you only saw one set of footprints, that was
when I was on the Letterbox USA site creating outrageous biblical
references to salad dressing.

Methinks someone should take this non-letterboxing-related-holier-
than-thou-pompous-christian-attitude to another group.

It is nice to see others who believe God gave us (most of us at
least) a sense of humor for a reason. I wouldn't have figured that
clue out without your help.

I assumed they were part of the cypher since both passages were
biblical misquotes. And since they are both references to the Judaic
rejection of Christianity, I wondered if it wasn't just someone
trying to stir up trouble.

Kind of tough at first glance, huh? I thought maybe the words were
in cryptogram form, but then noticed that the first is "GG" which
doesn't work. Now I see they are all in five letter increments. The
Bible references offer no help.

My curiosity is piqued, though, so if I get a clue, I'll let you know!

Until then, we can be mystified together.

Not being Christian, I wasn't familiar with these quotes, but your
statement that they are misquotes intrigued me, so I looked them up.

Both quotes seem to be from the King James Version of the Bible.

The first quote is from John 1:11 -- "He came unto his own, and his
own received him not." The latter words "but went down" do not seem
to appear in the actual text. This passage is also the title of a
poem by Mary Elizabeth Coleridge
(http://www.bartleby.com/236/255.html)

The second quote is from Proverbs 1:7 -- "The fear of the LORD is the
beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction."
Again, the latter words "and will not be lead across" do not seem to
appear in the actual text.

Whether any of this is important, I don't know. I'm still struggling
with the five letter cryptics.

I need a little bit of time to work on it, but unfortunately, I'm
headed out in about ten minutes or so. I'll try to get back to you
tomorrow if no one else has solved it.

LOL! Funny that epiphanies only occur when you have no time to
explore them.

What I meant, though, is that I figured out how to decode the
message, not the actual message itself. But, in true letterboxing
spirit, I can't reveal all here on the boards. I wrote the original
poster though, and if we're right, we'll, maybe we'll help you out!

cpascott wrote:
Boy, I'm writing alot on this thread, huh?

Here's the thing. This cryptogram was put together using a method
known as columnar transposition. The questions we have to answer in
order to figure it out are:

1. Was it single or double columnar transposition?
2. What is/are the keyword(s)?

I'm certain the quotes are provided to help us figure out what the
keyword(s) is/are. Two quotes may indicate two key words, and thus
double columnar transposition (which is more difficult to decode than
singular). Once we know the keyword(s) however, figuring out the
text of the cryptogram is relatively easy.

Send me an e-mail at seh-letterbox@comcast.net and we can finish this
analysis. Answers should NOT be posted to the group!

Some of you may have figured out I'm a Matthew 6 & 7 kinda guy.
Hopefully, my light shines bright enough in the halls of Shambala for that.
There's clue-giving going on, and scripture is part of the vehicle. It may help some find wisdom, as well as a letterbox, so let's all pack our thin skin away for this thread.

No, really - check out Matthew!

I am not particularly fondue of sterno warnings! The last person
who "warned" me got chopped up into little pieces, skewered onto the
end of a sharp stick, boiled in hot oil, and then dipped in a
tantalizing mixture of drawn butter and soy sauce.

Consider yourself warmed!

Re: Strange Message I Got - Help?

Oh Great and Mighty Oracle,

I was in no way insinuating one as awesome and wonderbread as
yourself needed any type of warning, sterno or otherwise.
I felt as a spiritual person I needed to show others the danger in
taking the easy trail. As you know wide and cheesy is the road to
hellava. But only the gouda shall inherit the earth.

However, if you feel you posess the cheese balls to oil and skewer me
we may have to finish this discussion of board.
